[TED로 영어공부하기-2일차] Connecting the dots, 스티브잡스 스탠포드 연설 첫번째 이야기

너무나도 유명한 스티브 잡스의 스탠포드 대학 졸업 연설,,

고등학생때 기말고사 시험범위라서 달달 외웠던 기억이 있는데 오랜만에 다시 들어봤다,,거의 5..6..7..년?만..

세월이 흘렀는데 고등학생 때의 영어 실력이 더 나은 것 같아 눈물이...

발표 영어 즉 스피킹을 잘하고 싶은 대학원생이기에 주요 문장만 정리해보려 한다.

·commencement: 시작, 개식, 졸업식

 

·Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduaton.

>"truth be told" 는 구어체에서도 자주 쓸 것 같은 느낌이다,, 

>get 의 쓰임이 정말 다양한 것 같다,,, 어제는 "get the kids to school" ; 아이들을 학교에 데려다 주다 를 배웠었지,,

 

·I dropped out of Reed college after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.

>drop out of ;~에서 중도하차 하다

>drop in: (형용사) 예약이 필요 없는/ 잠깐 들르다(on, at) / 우연히 마주치다(with)

>or so before: ~전까지

 

·My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.

 >unwed; 미혼의 (=unmarried)

 >put ~ up for adoption; ~을 입양시키다

 +put up for something: 입후보하다 -> put up for election; 선거에 입후보하다.

·Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.

·She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would go to college.

·naively: 솔직하게

 

·I couldn't see the value in it.

"가치를 느낄 수 없었다." 뭔가,,일상 생활에서 쓸만한 말이다... 뱉으려고 하면 어려울 것 같은

(하던 일을 그만두는 것이 쉽지 않다... 가치가 없을 때 포기 할 줄 아는 힘도 필요한 것 같은 요즘이다.. 내 인생이니까,,)

 

·It would all work out OK.

> work out: 일이 잘 풀리다/ 운동하다

 

·I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with, and~

 >deposit: 예금, 입금, 보증금

 (이 문장이 어찌나 안들리던지,,)

 

·And much of what I stumbled into / by following my curiosity and intuition / turned out to be priceless later on.

 

·I found it fascinating.

*띵언 정리*

 

Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. ut it was very, very clear looking backwards then years later. Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something--your cut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has bever let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
